Malaysia's 'worst in the world' taxis tarnish national image
The ads promoting "Malaysia: Truly Asia" aim to welcome visitors with a warm smile to a prosperous and modern nation, so the taxi fleet branded "the worst in the world" can come as a bit of a shock.
Even the locals are not spared the shabby service of unkempt and hostile drivers behind the wheels of decrepit vehicles who refuse to use the meter, overcharge and pick-and-choose which destinations they will travel to.
At the popular KLCC mall under Kuala Lumpur's iconic Petronas Twin Towers is a typical scene, as a gang of cabbies negotiate with a young Norwegian couple just metres from a signboard warning against "taxi touts".
"Flat rate, flat rate, no metre," one driver insists as the tourists try to find a cab to take them to their hotel, less than two kilometres (1.2 miles) away.
Anxious to escape the baking heat, they agree to pay 25 ringgit (7.22 dollars) for a trip that would have cost less than three ringgit on the meter.
"Is it expensive? We don't know, we thought it is normal here," said the woman as they piled in with their shopping bags.
More frequent visitors, however, are vocal in their criticism and say that aggressive and unprofessional drivers are tarnishing the nation's image as a squeaky clean and hospitable destination.
"I first visited Malaysia in 2006 and I was impressed by everything I saw except for the worst taxi service I have endured," said Kabir Dali, an Indian tourist waiting in vain for a metered taxi at another mall.
"I paid a whopping 260 ringgit (74 dollars) from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport to town and was later told that was twice the proper amount."
Complaints about taxis are common in many countries, but in Malaysia it has escalated to an outpouring of frustration, on blog sites and in letters to newspapers.
In a survey by the local magazine The Expat, some 200 foreigners from 30 countries rated Malaysia the worst among 23 countries in terms of taxi quality, courtesy, availability and expertise.
The respondents lashed the fleet as "a source of national shame" and "a serious threat to tourists -- rude bullies and extortionists".
Salvation is in sight though, as a number of smaller, up-scale operators enter the market to provide a more expensive but quality taxi service for frustrated visitors and locals.
The uniformed drivers, behind the wheels of smart new multi-purpose vehicles and sedans, switch on the meter as a matter of course and do not refuse destinations -- surprising and delighting commuters in the capital.
Abdul Razak, operations manager for Dubai-based Citicab which launched here in January, said that even in poorer nations such as Thailand and Indonesia, taxis are smarter and the drivers far more courteous.
"I would say it is the worst in this region, undoubtedly. I have travelled to all countries in this region and our company operates taxis in many parts of the world. The situation here is the worst I have seen," he told AFP.
"The vehicles are in shabby condition, the driver will take you if he likes your face -- that is, if he agrees with where you want to go for the price he insists on."
The government has called on taxi firms to lift their standards, but various campaigns have achieved little, and many blame the lack of enforcement on rampant corruption in the police and bureaucracy.
"It is difficult for the roads and traffic department to take stern action," said a security officer at one city mall as he watched the touts swoop.
"Taxi operators and the company which hold the licences are all linked to some politician or another," he said. "Drivers here are ruthless because they are unchecked by authorities who are almost non-existent."
John Koldowski, from the Pacific Asia Travel Association, said that "less than desirable" taxi drivers have an outsize impact on a nation's image.
"The first contact a tourist gets with locals is often during airport transits to hotels and it creates a very, very strong first impression, either be good or bad," he said.
"Authorities certainly need to do their jobs and act upon any complaints strongly, quickly and visibly."

BUT.. was nt allowed to listen to their ANTAC meeting.. WTF?!?!??!!
nvm lo~ went to eric's house to study chem.. until 4sth went back to sch.. waited........... 5pm.. went to fetch my sis home.. waited.. 5.20pm!! super ki siao record!! meeting 3hrs!! kolien them.. =.=
then nite time.. went to lobin's house.. then went to STARBUCKS to have our enjoy nite~~ ordered a cup of Chocolate Chip Cream.. or wateva it is called.. quite niced.. XD don dare to order any caffeine products.. aware that i may nt sleep later!! haha.. bla bla bla.. then baru noe that we are committee members of ANTAC.. i hear tio.. very angry.. they wan us b committee.. bt yet don allow us to attend their meeting.. what the fucking thing is this??? and we are allowed to go up ourself.. BUT.. cant touch our car when arrived at campsite n not allowed to leave the campsite?????? lu ki siao ar! who would be so eng to do such wu liao thing.. AND.. i think this matter should b referred to those wiv warrants.. nt those wiv only red-caps or rovers.. dont u ppl think its those warrants who always went to their cars n take sth or sit inside enjoying the aircond? and go to Buntal or anywhr to hav dinner?? and now warn us not to do so?? what kind of example is this?? how do u expect us members to respect u ppl old old d?? one word.. it all began with.. errr.. nt sure.. bt i had already symptoms of nearly fainting pass 2 days.. oso not sure why.. and today.. halfway doing my MX paper II.. sneezed a few times.. felt my body became hot in increasing manner.. oso became quite fragile.. u noe.. get more times the damage inflicted when attacked by a matter.. well.. this reli gav me lots of trouble.. while doing the MX paper.. some easy questions.. i cnt managed to do.. the stupiak graph.. teacher say need change.. i bo xim change.. i even left out 1 question which i asked myself why it did not turn up at all.. =.= quite stupid huh?
well.. now.. posting my daily post.. after a sleep of 3 hrs jz now.. still felt a little dizzy and wan peng.. >.< hope will recover asap.. or else im not gonna do well for my sc paper tml.... T.T

Cuti-Cuti Malaysia
1. There are only 365 days in a year. Take away 104 days of Saturdays and Sundays weekends and we have left 261 working days. But Malaysia is multi-religious and we must not work during Raya, Chinese New Year and Deepavali. But we must also not work on Wesak Day, Taipusam, Christmas, New Year, Federal Territory Day, various Muslim holy days and I do not know what else.
2. But we must not work on by-election polling day also. Then there is the Agong's Birthday and the birthdays of all the Sultans and Governors.
3. We seem to find more reason for not working. If the holiday falls on a weekend, then have a long vacation beginning the day before Saturday and the day after Sunday - four days in all.
5. But I ask myself are people like me, a pensioner being paid and not working? Or is the country on automatic - administrating itself? Or is it that there really is not much work to do that we can close up for one-third of the year?
6. We are still a developing country. Developing requires work. Rich developed countries can afford not to work. August holidays see the cities like Paris and London bereft of traffic.
7. I believe, but I may be wrong, that when you are trying to catch up with someone running ahead of you, you must run faster than him. We have this great ambition to become a developed country. If we move slower than our objective can we catch up? I think we cannot.
8. A developed country today and a developed country in 2020 is not the same. In 2020 it will be far more advanced and richer than in 2008. The developed status is not static. It is moving.
9. Even if it seem to be growing slowly percentage-wise, but its one percent is bigger than our 5 or 6 percent. Our base is lower. To catch up we must really grow faster.
10. Can we grow faster by not working? I think not.
11. Lets look at the implication of having holidays. If workers have to work on holidays they have to be paid twice their daily wage. If they work beyond working hours they have to be paid four times their wages. And many industries just cannot stop operating.
12. All these add up to higher cost of production and therefore we will be less competitive. For a trading nation which depends on exporting goods, raw material and services, the cost of our exports is important. We will not be competitive especially against low-wage countries. But not to worry. The Government will make us competitive by withdrawing subsidies and giving them back again under different headings in the budget or off-budget.
13. Its a bit early but I would like to wish everyone Happy Hari Raya. Please drive slowly. We want you to come back after a very relaxing 4 - 5 days holiday. Do not worry about unfinished work. It can take care of itself.
P.S. I think the Government and the private sector should consider retreats. It's not a holiday of course but comes very close to a holiday. Besides you can become a savvy agriculturist.

However, I think that the real reasons are as follows:
1. I think there are too many Islamic holidays.
2. I think there are too many hours wasted on Fridays.
3. I think there is too much wasted working hours during Ramadan.
Muslims should sacrifice time and money (take unpaid leave hours; now that is a Jihad!) to pray and not expect Chinese businesses and tax payers (mainly non-Muslims) to subsidise them so that they can be "good" Muslims. I think that is “haram”, but heh, what do I know? I am just a stupid, irrelevant Dhimmi!

im really agree with ur opinion tun that now we have a lot of holiday and also a lot of time to be waste. even during the work time, still a lot of people rather waste their time by lepak at warung or mamak stall for 1-2 hours juz for laughing and sembang2..we know that if we want to achieve our mission2020, not just increase the quantity or time to work but we also had to increase our QUALITY too..

224 days = working days/yr
141 days = leaves + sick leaves + 16 Sept(suggested by DSAI) and by-election (PP)
I love to work in Malaysia as Malaysian(even my expatriate friends is delighted)... I'll be spending 1/4 yr for holidays.
Please politician's add more holidays so I can earn $$ and work less and thanks for this people I got :) big bonus... + OT... OMG. bling..bling..

Malaysia Based Multi races country has to many holidays. Is not productive. Isn't the government to do some thing about the bank sectors, as we need to wait 48 hrs before our local check can be clear, or outstation check needs more than a week?? Even though on holidays, isn't 24 banking to serve it's meaning
Custom clearance, compare to our neigbour country, we are far far behind. Can government do something about it?? I believe this is the reason why investor prefered to have their hub in our neighbour country.
It takes a lot of effort for the improvement, but "Rakyat" is prepare to work for the best interest of individual & Malaysia.

When I went to the Loaf in Langkawi in 2006 , I asked your staff "pukul berapa masuk, kena punch in tak ?" hehe..I was not at all suprised to learn their actual working hours. I think developed countries can afford to work 5 days a week because they do not have many, many holidays like ours..We need to have minimum working hours per month. If we do not reach the hours, our pay should be deducted..This way productivity will be maintained. Well.. I don't think anyone will agree with me.
